The Eighteen Elders Form is named on honor of the eighteen grandmasters of these styles. Each movement could individually be traced to these systems.

The historical and sentimental significance of this form has dimmed amongst modern mantis schools, but the form remains technically important in that it is the first form that trains the practitioner to practice both left and right sides. It is also referred to as Eighteen Hands, as the word for Elders and Hands share the same pronunciation in Cantonese and Mandarin.
